Café-restaurant Die Port van Cleve was located in a part of the demolished brewery De Hooiberg brewery on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam. This brewery was purchased by Gerard Adriaan Heineken in 1864, but production was moved to the new Heineken brewery on Stadhouderskade in 1867. Die Port van Cleve was opened in 1870 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken, who invested in many cafés and restaurants.The Boer Wars were two wars fought between 1880 and 1902 between the Boers and the British administration in South Africa. The Boers were mainly descendants of Dutch colonists. The Boers enjoyed a great deal of sympathy in the Netherlands in their struggle against the British.

'Price Courant' of beer bottling plant 'Die Port van Cleve', on which a bottle of Steam Beer Brewery "De Hooiberg" is depicted and a price list of different beers: Bavarian Beer, Light Beer and Table Beer (Barley). On the back an image of a 'SNIPER MEAL'. The snipers (South African Boers who fought against the British administration) sit around a table and all have a glass of beer in their hands. In the middle the flags of the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State. In the foreground on the left a box with the inscription 'EXPORTBIER/ GEBR. HULSCHER/ AMSTERDAM'. In the foreground in the middle a beer barrel with 'H.B.M. (Heineken's Bierbrouwerij Maatschappij)/ AMSTERDAM' on the lid. At the top of the text: 'We are confident that the sun of freedom will also rise for South Africa, but if the republics are to belong to England, it will be at a price that will horrify humanity'.
