Rectangular Heineken label with red star, Pilsener Beer, 30 cl, Dutch market
Although the familiar oval Heineken label with a green border had been used for export beers for a long time, Heineken used a rectangular label with a large red star in the Netherlands. This was introduced in the 1930s when Heineken also started bottling beer for the Dutch market itself. Before that, the beer was bottled in the Netherlands by agents. The star label already features the slanted “e's”, known as “smiling e's”. These were incorporated into the brand name at the insistence of A.H. (Freddy) Heineken (1923-2002). The label features the coat of arms of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (1911-2004) in the top right corner. In 1948, he granted Heineken permission to use this coat of arms with the title of purveyor to the royal household. In 1954, the star label was replaced by the oval label with a green border and the black Heineken bar, which was then introduced worldwide.
