Round bottling machine for 12 beer bottles
This type of bottling machine was used by agents of the breweries, who sold the beer to their own customers. Until the 1930s, the beer was not bottled in the Heineken and Amstel breweries, but was delivered in barrels. At the Heineken brewery in Rotterdam however, beer was already bottled in glass bottles for export from 1875 onwards. By pasteurizing the full bottles, the beer had a longer shelf life during the long journeys. Bottling beer in glass bottles could only take place on a larger scale from the end of the 19th century, when it became possible to produce those bottles in large quantities. Before that, the beer was bottled in earthenware jars. On the bottling machine is a brass plate with the name 'Revolver'. It is unclear whether this refers to the brand or the type of the machine. After all, to revolve means: to turn around a center.
