Group photograph of the Amstel Brewery

The foundation stone of the Beiersch Bierbrouwerij De Amstel was laid on the Mauritskade in Amsterdam in 1870. It was founded by Charles de Pesters (1842-1915) and Johannes van Marwijk Kooy (1847-1916). The first beer was produced two years later. The brewery brewed the bottom-fermenting lager, which was clearer than Dutch top-fermenting beers and was considered a ‘gentlemen's beer’. Amstel was successful, brewing 25,000 hectolitres of beer by 1873, consumed mainly in Amsterdam. From 1883, it also produced for export. Director Bienfait was technical director from 1880 and, like Van Marwijk Kooy and De Pesters, came from a distinguished Amsterdam family. In these years, however, the brewery still mainly used the knowledge of German brewmasters. Amstel was a formidable competitor to the Heineken Brewery and was acquired by Heineken in 1968. The brewery on Mauritskade was demolished in 1983.
